This 90 minute video covers the set up and use techniques for both the Jamieson boring bar system and the Jamieson laser measuring system.
Fred Holder, the owner and publisher of More Woodturning, the newspaper for turners did an in-depth review of the video in the March-April 2003 issue. The only good part about this video is the jig setup for doing hollow forms. He just talks and talks and says nothing. Get to the point and turn! He turns 1 HF through the entire video. One - thats it! Waste of time and money.
There is some excellent information on this DVD. However, because Jamison wrote and directed the DVD no editing was, very obviously, effected.
Jamison says in 500 words what could be said in 5. This makes the DVD very difficult to watch. Fortunately, most players have a 2x or greater speed play.
Hollow forms are not for beginners yet Jamison treats the audience as if they had never touched a tool.
I would like to begin turning hollow forms. Jamison's system is clever and appears to make it seem very easy. Reading reviews on turning forums, the majority will agree that this is about the easiest way to turn hollow forms.
A good video if interested in HF turnings and the Jamison captured system.
I rate this a 3. Good information but in need of heavy editing. This would make a great 30 minute DVD!
Outstanding.
The presentation was well scripted (well, actually, it didn't SOUND "scripted", so let me say that the presentation was well planned and well designed). The visual aids were very clear. The video was well lit and well shot - the camera placement was always perfect.
The explanation of deep hollowing was very well done. I have every confidence that I can build my own deep hollowing rig (or, easier yet, buy one from Lee Valley) and start doing a good job hollowing ASAP.
The best bit was all of the little potential gotchas that were covered. I wish more videos were this thorough.
