In this video, Trent Bosch welcomes you into his Fort Collins, Colorado studio and shows you in detail all the tools and techniques he uses to sculpt his work after it is removed from the lathe. From large roughing tools, which allow you to remove the wood quickly to fine detailing tools used to create even the most subtle effects, this video is sure to inspire the wood sculptor inside every woodturner.

I think Sculpting Wood:Beyond The Lathe is the best video on lathe work on the market. Everyone should view it. It is full of advice and stirs up the imagination to do greater and more original work. On a scale from 1 to 10 it rates a ten.

This was a great video. I am now even more excited about combinimg my wood turning and carving. The only draw back was the condition of the DVD. It kept stopping and skipping, but I got through it.
I felt this was a mediocre video, especially given Bosch's design brilliance, woodworking skills, and prominence nationally. Too much time was spent superficially reviewing a wide range of wood carving, sanding, and shaping tools, and how Bosch has organized his own professional shop. He demonstrated two different approaches to shaping wood off the lathe, but the instructional content was slim, with not enough coverage of either design or techniques. This was basically, a "Watch how I do this," video.
Sculpting wood: Beyond the lathe: was not quite what I had anticipated from such a respected woodturner. I know they were not working on a Hollywood budget but I had hoped for the instruction to be cleaner and more concise. That is not to say that you can't pull any good information from this DVD, but it is not something you would need to refer back to once you have seen it the first time. Before I had found out about Smartflix this DVD was on the top of my list to buy. I am glad I didn't waste the money.
Many of Trent Bosch's DVDs suffer from bad camera angles and dead pan narrative. It's too bad because Trent is very talented and a really good teacher. Trent's studio is comprised of tools that he made himself in a studio that's probably bigger than my entire house. In a way, he shows too many tools as the average woodturner would be hard pressed to purchase and store that many tools. The little carving that is shown is excellent. I would have loved to have seen much more. He shows a hollow form in the wrap up that is gorgeous but no mention about how is was made. I found myself not wanting to sit through a second viewing because of the tedium. Recommended with reservations.
