Merv is upholstery's sensei.
I am grateful when craftsmen, in their respective trades, share their tribal knowledge with those of us who are curious enough to watch and listen. Merv does just that in each of his videos.
If you've ever wanted to trim your old hot rod, repair that padded shop stool the dog chewed up, or re-cover your favorite old chair then you need to rent Merv's videos.
Shot in an analog format, voice over by Merv himself. Good visual detail, well paced and tons of information.
I love Merv! I rented one video of the set, for one specific training - tying springs. I don't know everything else he teaches, but at this time I only needed to know how to do that. I watched that part 3 times so that it was imprinted in my brain. It was like being in the room with Merv with hands-on training. No skipped steps, no vague words. You could work alongside him.
This is a slow moving, amateur video made by a skilled and knowledgable professional. Despite it's problems I did manage to walk away with some know-how.
We tried a couple times to watch the DVDs but the quality, slowness etc was so bad that we just couldn't. What we did watch was not informative. Alot of the time the narrative was not about what he was actually doing. We would not recommend them to anyone.
If you want good info from someone who's been in the business for over 40 years-- Merv's you man. You do have to consider that he made this instructional video himself and he's no expert. Yes, there are times when he's between his project & the camera. And he talks a little slow--so plan on speeding him up a bit. But he's a very likeable guy & has a wealth of knowledge to impart.
I was very disappointed in this video. The quality was poor. The information was not complete. You will find yourself looking at the front of a chair while he works on the back, you will be told he will explain or show it later and he doesn't. Don't waste your time on this one.
