I was thoroughly impressed with Nora's projects and completeness in technique. Some of the camera work could have been better had they used more than one camera. Over all her videos are fabulous. I've ordered her other DVDs as I wanted to assure the quality of these first three as to content, informativeness and photographic quality in display.I am looking forward to the rest of her other DVDs and then some of your others which seem quite appealing. Keep up the good work. I'm sorry I didn't become aware of Smartfix years ago. I'm 76 and pressed for time. Thanks again!
Nora Hall does not converse freely as she has a little difficulty in conversing freely in English. Her talents however do more to show the proper use and techniques in wood carving. I have only seen some of her videos. Each has been a true treasure of knowledge and ideas that are there to teach you the correct way to carve. This DVD could not come more highly recommended as a true gem as were her previous ones.
This was a truly informative DVD of wood carving design and technique. Nora Hall should make newer ones and continue her fathers legacy of sharing the old world carving techniques. This is a true gem and a find for anyone beginning to carve. I can't wait to receive the next one
A fabulous fully informative set of DVDs. Extremely helpful source of all the info to help you better utilize and develop your talents Strongly recommend these.
A good teaching source of the basics and an invaluable section on how to sharpen your tools and properly use them. Strongly recommend. Some of the photo shots were not the best. Overall the DVD is worth every penny and then some.
A truly fine lesson on how to layout, design and carve your project. Strongly recommended. I wish she had a greater number of volumes as each in its own right is a great source of old world expertise. Her talent is truly spectacular.
Ellenwood's Sharpening Simplified is a classic on sharpening carving tools. It is fully comprehensive and an excellent source for how-to sharpen most all your shop tools. I'd give it ten stars.
A truly outstanding teaching DVD for beginner woodcarvers.
Not a bad primer for beginners. Could've used more info on paints viscosity, dilution etc. Video blocked some meaningful shots where you should have had unobstructive close-ups of the more difficult areas.
A really fine beginner tutorial. Excellent video could've been a little more on the ball but still good. Content was excellent. Would be nice if he could come up with a more challenging advanced project on a subsequent video with markedly increased sharp close-ups. Over-all, projects, tools and techniques were excellent.
Great product, Very comprehensive, hands on and informative.
This is by far two of the best, most informative videos on one of the most challenging wood turning turning tools, the skew. The quality is superb. The content is priceless and will remove any doubts on what you can do with this most challenging, gratifying lathe tool. I haven't turned in years and forgot a lot and lost my touch. This video will show you the how to's how not to's regarding the use of the skew. The videos are 1 1/2 and 2 hours. Thoroughly discussed in full content from A to Z. It's a must for any wood turner.
A truly fabulous, comprehensive DVD on wood bowl turning one could ask for. A purist might find it boring but any beginner or any turner who would like to find out what you're doing wrong will love this DVD. This is truly fully comprehensive as to theory, equipment, technique and personal approaches that you can observe from start to finish. From cutting down the tree to finishing techniques of your project. The tool presentation regarding types, applications, grinding angles and presentations of differing gouges etc to the work are most complete in every aspect in all applications. I wish Smartflix had more of Mike Darlow's DVDs. I'm not into bowl turning. This truly mesmerized me and has piqued my curiosity as to give it a shot. I have a tree I'm cutting up now. Thought I'd try some plate turning for my chip carving applications. He removes the mystery from all aspects of bowl turning so as to reveal all of the facets involved in a complete and simple common sense delivery. Please get some more Mike Darlow DVDs.
When it comes to turning skip this one. It is by far the most bloviating, uninformative DVD ever. There is more valuable information in 1 minute of Richard Rffan's DVD's than in this 2 hour farce. Not for anything but I don't know how they produced this. It should have been entitled All The things you shouldn't do in bowl turning. I was looking for info on plates and saw plates in the description. The only plate shown was a very simple plain drab one that was finished. Most of the time was wasted on chit chat and very little instructive technique of any value. PASS THIS ONE UP. I truly feel I wasted 2 hours of my time watching this let alone the cost of the rental.
Having read the reviews on Richard Raffan, I can only say that they were truly understated. His DVD is chock full of expertise and instruction. Even his bloops, he displays as a lesson to be learned. The DVD is loaded from beginning to end with marvelous displays of expertise shown at it's best ny superb photography. I can't wait to try his second DVD. His hands and fingers guide those gouges and chisel like magic. It just makes you want top run up to the show and see if you can duplicate it. He is a modest highly talented wood turner.Definitely a don't miss DVD.
