This video was just wonderful. Johnnie is superb as an artist and a teacher -- I got sooooo much information from her extraordinary instruction, even though I work in pastel. She is able to share so much in her ongoing dialogue as she paints. If I could I would want to study with her in person! I am renting her entire series if I can. A++++ A true must watch video if you want to paint in oils but even if you just want to understand children's portraiture and proportions.
Paul is always good no matter what he does. I've seen him in person and he is so real and honest. It's truly an amazing process to watch him as he goes from a completely blank paper to the finished portrait which is an incredible work of art. Great ongoing instruction from him, explanations, what to look for and what not to do, details, lots of good info here from a master!
This is a new method to use pastel and charcoal for me personally. I liked it a lot! Very good. Not taken with the subject matter for the first part but second part was so exciting and intriguing! Very well done and very good to see how to lay light and darks to create the work....well worth the rental.
I just love Ramon Kelley. He's one of my favorite top 5 pastel painters! And this dvd, Painting the Nude female in pastel, was no less than I would expect from him. With great confidence, sensitivity and care he sets the stage for his beautiful model. His instruction is ongoing and so insightful - you want to hang on to every word he says...and his painting is just remarkable. I can't say enough about this. This is a DVD I would want to buy and watch over and over again. There's so much packed into this 2 hour session....one viewing is NOT enough!! No matter what your medium is to paint and your subject matter you will learn so much from this ingenious Master Painter!
Even though my interest is not in painting landscapes, Mr Rohm's rendition of the landscape photo was absolutely phenomenal! He is brilliant!! and his information is excellent. His inspiration has touched me..might just try a landscape! If color, composition, pastels, and perception that is out of the box interest you then rent this video! It is so well worth it! Thank you for this one, too, Smartflix!
I've always been intrigued by the palette knife, but pastel is my medium. However, watching the artist use the knife so deftly and make it look so incredibly easy has wet my appetite to give it a try. I'd say this was for a rank beginner (that's me) in this technique. It's really just what I was looking for to see how the knife is manipulated and the variety of strokes and effects that can be achieved with it. I would love to see one on using the palette knife in portraits and nudes. Well worth the rental and yes, like the other member stated, this is very much like the Joy of Painting technique that employs the brush.
This artist is just terrific! I hope you get more of her series on smartflix. She is so incredibly informative and generous with her information. She is a true teacher in my opinion. Got lots of great information about use of color, explanation of the terms used (half tones etc), love her limited palette and how simply she was able to cool down a color or warm it up, planes on the faces, softening edges, application, and placement. Two portraits on one canvas of 2 different women... This was just a terrific learning session. Definitely rent it!
I previously rented his pastel painting of the nude model and this oil portrait shows him living up to all of my expectations. He is truly one of the world's greatest, gifted, ingenious artists alive today. Don't miss this man in action.
This DVD is superb. At first I thought well this is working awfully small and it looks so disjointed.. how will he ever bring this together? Well, Gregg Kreutz is an amazing artist who uses values, temperatures and colors in such a magnificent manner. You will learn a tremendous amount from this man and what I love about this DVD is that he isn't afraid to let you know that he made an error and needs to correct it. The corrections are shown and his explanations are logical. It's so honest and delightful to watch him work. Only a few items - strokes- and then the green pillow- were added when I was not looking!!
I couldn't see any cuts in the video so don't really know when he filled in these few things but don't be surprised that only maybe 3 things were added that we didn't see full developed on the video. Excellent camera work by the way and video resolution..they bring you so up close to the canvas you can see absolutely everything with great clarity!
Excellent!!
Bill Hosner is definitely a sketcher.. you can see that immediately as he puts his pastel to the paper. So he has provided a DVD that is quite different because he does come from the sketching background. It's a very good session at the beach with a live model. He is methodical and very logical in all he teaches and says. He uses great precision and does a magnificent job on the painting. Sometimes though it appears to me that he is drawing and coloring in the shapes....but when the painting is finished the overall appearance is just beautiful. He achieves what he sets out to do. I enjoyed it very much and the end product is a terrific painting with interest and movement. Loved his subject matter of women in long flowing skirts, scarves, hats, etc.
Disc #2 is quite short and shows his gallery of about 5 paintings and offers some other tips and information about his set up of pastels, what brands he uses, values, lighting and other good tips.
This man is the Teacher's Teacher. I really thought I had seen the top of the line but Everett Raymond Kinstler is cream of the crop. Traditional in many of his approaches he offers the finest and absolute best information that I can ever imagine receiving. Watching him I felt that I was studying at the Sorbonne. He is amazingly talented and tells wonderful stories and has had one of the richest histories of meeting so many influential painters. A real character, he expresses himself well and his art work speaks for itself. Some one mentioned his name dropping....well I was impressed that he was able to learn from so many wonderful artists and pass their information on to us. He is so generous with his knowledge and information. Do not pass up this Video. And of all things, I can't believe that he was teaching in Lyme, CT which is not too far from where I live and I missed his presentation. Kinstler is truly a Master Painter!
This was a very good Dvd for charcoal or conte drawing of nudes. I enjoyed the quick poses and the warm ups. Took me back to the class that was almost identical to this dvd. Good for beginners and reminders to us all how important drawing, sketching is for a final work.
This gent is quite a character...very, very interesting and full of good and positive chatter. It's his passion for what he is doing as well as his work that captivates you as a student. Excellent teacher and very delightful to watch and listen to. Lots of good instruction and advice. Definitely recommend this DVD! Actually, I wished I had a copy of my own. Carol Lavoie
Very good demonstration of live model portrait painting. The artist takes his time and in quite lengthy with all of his explanations from lighting to values, temperatures, how to check shapes, etc. Talented and creative, Dan Gerhartz is not only a fine instructor but very good artist! CArol Lavoie
Johnnie Liliedahl is so consistently wonderful!! Never a disappointment and never skips anything! She's so thorough and each DVD is just full of useful information if you are a beginner or already knowledgable in the craft. She has quickly become one of my favorite teachers and I continue to look forward to more of her teaching! Rating: EXCELLENT! Definitely study from this true artist and natural teacher!
Again, Johnnie just gets better and better! She covers all the basics and shows you - literally takes you by the hand - and shows you step by step how to draw the head of this stunning live model in oil. The three poses are so helpful to see the correct angles (frontal, 3/4 and profile. Her renderings are so beautiful and her instruction is superb! I can't praise her enough!
Johnnie Liliedahl is brilliant! she is just an all around artist and no matter what medium she is using her work is superb. I learned so much from this series...both Disc 1 and 2 are necessary for the full set of information. This is jammed with great instruction, she's so organized and clear and takes you by the hand, step by step. I LOVE learning from her. I get the concepts and can develop what meager skills I have with ease. A++
The artist is excellent at what he does. Carbon pencil is not my method of choice. He is precise and exact - I did find the introduction quite tedious and drawn out. Good information. Not inspiring for me but I am glad I saw it.
THIS HAS TO BE ONE OF THE VERY BEST DVDS EVER! THE ARTIST IS QUITE A CHARACTER AND HIS PERSONALITY IS SHEER DELIGHT. He takes you through his basic checklist and his information is just excellent. Even if you have never done an abstract painting or find abstract art to be your 'thing' you will find that this DVD lays it all out and is so much fun! He completes 5 full paintings and again, is such a delight to watch in action!
this was a fabulous dvd and excellent instruction by the artist. I highly recommend for any pastel painter. She takes you through the incredible under painting which is what gives the picture the intensity and punch of color. She takes you step by step and it's clear to watch every motion and stroke she makes. The painting is gorgeous and her commentary is very good... not too chatty or lengthy...but good information and the focus is kept on her work. Definitely rent this one! even if you do not work in pastel...it lends itself to oils and acrylics as well!
You know I just love when I know what to expect from an artist and teacher. Johnnie Liliedahl is so consistently wonderful and always delivers the absolute best. No real flare, no bells or whistles, just fabulous nuts and bolts instruction and techniques that is so usable and a finished work of art! I am always impressed with what she does and I know I can trust her methods for excellent results. We've all seen that the shelves of art stores carry premixed copper, silver, pewter and gold and brass paints but she shows you how to use your 12 color palette to make these shades and apply color next to color to not only make your eyes see copper and gold/brass but also brighten the metals to gleaming, glistening colors! She is amazing...Additionally, the camera work is superb. You are shown the still life insert many times during the instruction and the quality is 100%. She and her productions are on the top of my list. If you are still a student at any level learning how to paint (who isn't?) her Dvds are just timeless.
This Dvd is superb....Robert Johnson is a fabulous artist..and the DVD camera work doesn't miss a single stroke. I learned a tremendous amount from watching this and might just rent it again! It was long, 2 hours, I think, but very informative. He really makes it look easy to do....trust me it's not that easy but not that difficult either. I just love the freedom with which he paints...and how it all glows. He's an excellent artist.
Helen was just one of the modern day artists and teachers who ranks at the top of my list. She's old school and really shows you the nuts and bolts that she uses to make her masterpieces! So wish she was still with us. There's not one dvd or book of hers that will disappoint you...from beginner to advanced, all students will benefit and grow from her teaching and this DVD is no exception to that promise. She delivers tools and methods that you can begin to use immediately in your painting. She's truly one of the Grand Dame's of exquisite art in our time.
Helen Van Wyk always delivers what she says she will! Just excellent techniques and information for the beginner and intermediate painter. Yes, I would definitely recommend it...you can 't go wrong with any of her suggestions - ever!
Tom Browning is a fine painter. He makes it look very easy...clear and good solid instruction.. good camera work, too. I enjoyed it and learned quite a bit from it.
Realistic glass - this DVD was ok...not my favorite and not really what I was hoping for. The teacher was careful and precise, not particularly interesting or enthusiastic. Most of the brush work that was done was minute and focused with precision, all tiny brushes being used. I would not really recommend this Dvd strongly even though the subject matter is not addressed widely elsewhere. However, I think either Helen Van Wyk or Johnnie Lilliedahl does something with glass that is much more informative. CArol L.
10 thumbs up! What more praise can I offer than has already been given to this icon of our modern times. He is a Master Painter without question and such a humble soul as well. Thoroughly enjoyed both the painting demo and the questions and answers - yes somewhat contrived but who cares - his information is precious and so insightful. This DVD is for intermediate to advanced painters. I am hoping that SmartFlix will be able to get some of his DVDs on painting flowers as well. Watch this and you'll be watching a master of the 21st Century at work! Carol L.
I received part 1 of this oil painting demonstration. Bob Rohm is no nonsense and after telling you what colors he uses on his sparse palette he gets right to work. I like that in a painter - direct, clear, focused. He does narrate some throughout the painting as to what he is doing and why which is very good. It is a slower demo than others that I have seen but this really gives you ample time to paint along with him if you want to. The painting itself isn't breathtakingly beautiful but it is colorful and interesting. I do recommend the DVD for intermediate painters and did find valuable information in it for myself.
This DVD is not an instructional one but rather a stellar collection of this Master artist's works. Exceptional painter...the dvd is nothing short of that!
Miraculous! What a master painter Mr Schmid is. Again in this DVD he does a fabulous demonstration of a landscape painting. The camera work is incredible..you can see absolutely everything so clearly from mixing paint on his palette to the brush strokes. Part 2 is where he educates us with his nonchalant, unassuming brilliant monologue. I learned so much from him in this series and this DVD is no exception, In fact, in the second section Part 2 of this DVD I learned so much more than the 'educational' question/answer section of the first DVD in this series! Next, I'd love to watch him in action when painting a nude figure. Well worth owning this DVD!
Oh my gosh.. Zhaoming Wu is a genius. Definitely rent this video.. I wish I could afford to buy it - it is so fantastic. Some people had some difficulty with his speech. Honestly language was no barrier he was really easily understood. And his painting speaks for itself. The work is one of the finest paintings I've ever seen in all my years. The camera work was impeccable. He is a slow painter and offers some excellent instruction and reasoning for what he is doing. This DVD taught me so much..even though I viewed it 3x I wish that I had kept it to re-rent for another 2 weeks at least. It's stunning and the finished painting is beyond magnificent. Carol L.
This DVD of part 1 and 2 was excellent. Sherrie does a realistic still life painting in this DVD and is so very thoughtful during the entire process. YOu hear what she is thinking as she very slowly contemplates the set up and begins to paint. She paints very slowly and the brushstrokes are beautiful. Her color sense is exquisite and the lighting is dramatic. This was a beautiful painting and executed with perfection. She tells you what she is doing almost every step of the way. The camera work is wonderful. Don't miss it if realism is your thing for a still life. Carol L.
Enjoyed Ken Auster tremendously. He didn't fidget or pace or seem to be anxious. I found him engaging and his information very helpful. For his demos I do wish he had chosen something different to paint but nevertheless found his work very good. He works with such confidence and ease.. love his broad strokes and thinking of the whole. Brushstrokes were very interesting to watch. When you watch him you know you are watching a painter with tremendous skill. I do recommend this dvd. Carol Lavoie
Now this is a gent who I wish I could study from in person. I've not had formal art training but always love all kinds of art. Now that I am painting I see how missing out the very basics, like composition, leaves a gap. Ian Roberts fills that gap and I think that whatever stage you are as a hobbyist you will gain tremendous important and necessary information to enhance and improve your own artwork. This is a MUST DVD and I only wish I had seen it earlier on Smartflix. Because of this superior Dvd I just might also get the book for ongoing reference after the notes I've made from watching the Dvd. Definitely recommend!
Susie Short is very good as an instructor and painter. I enjoyed this DVD and found some of her suggestions and techniques helpful. Would have like to have seen it go for a longer time... maybe another 20 minutes but we get the gist of it all with what she offered. Thanks, Smartflix!!
Kevin MacPherson is great no matter what he is painting. I rented disc 1 only because I thought that the picture on the website was what he was going to paint. Instead it was not a snow scene as the picture shown but a very colorful winter scene. He did a very good job but it was not what I thought I was going to learn about. The camera work is great as is his technique and color mixing ... well worth the renting but now I will rent the second disc wtih the painting shown on the site. I have asked Smart flix to show the paintings on each disc if they are different so we can choose the ones we want.
Oh this was well worth the very long wait! She is an amazing artist! I rate it as EXCELLENT. The dvd is so well done... lots of shots of the palette while mixing colors, of the canvas and reference photo. The finished painting is stunning! She talks all the way through the painting with a soothing voice and slowly enough to grasp all that she says.. her information so helpful. I learned so much from this dvd and played it atleast 3 times...and it was very long! But I enjoyed the last run as much as the first. Her landscape was beautiful and her sky was a true show stopper! I'd love to study with her if she ever comes out to my part of the country! Am sure you will completely enjoy this dvd, but do keep in mind that it is very long but very worthwhile! Carol Lavoie
