I had been awaiting the Zhaoming Wu DVD for a couple of months and I was thrilled to get it in the mail. Sorry to say, and perhaps this just reflects on my poor ear or impatience, but ..... I was distracted from the painting demonstration by my difficulty in following the gentleman's Chinese accent. He was dubbed in English sometimes but not all the time, which would have worked out better. This would have been a greater disappointment had I purchased the DVD. Overall, this man's art is beautiful..

This is one of the best instructional DVDs on oil painting I have seen. Mr. Greene gives detailed instructions on his palette paint preparation, he gives interesting insights, and the camera often pans to the model as he is painting, for purposes of comparison and demonstration of his portrait painting. I think this DVD approximates taking a workshop with this master.

I've seen a number of instructional videos on painting and I'd say this was one of the better ones. The artist painted a very credible portrait of a stunning model, he explained his choices of colors and his technique, and he was very personable and related with good humor to his audience (me). I have just pulled out of a live life painting class after a few sessions because of a disconnect I felt with the artist (a very good one) and I appreciate even more the opportunity to see how it's done, close up, with DVD instructions like this one. I put high up on that list of "teachers, by example" artists like Morgan Weistling, Daniel Greene, Burton Silverman and Richard Schmid.

Overall, pretty good DVD with confident brushwork. This DVD more be a little more helpful if there were a 2 camera shoot with the other view closer to the painter with a better perspective of the model which the artist sees and paints. This is a very small issue; the DVD is worth renting.

I waited for about 5 months to get this DVD....an exceeding long wait. I wonder why more copies could not have been procured by Smartflix. But Jeremy Lipking is superb at what he paints - I especially enjoyed his full length figure painting at last October's USArtists show in Philadelphia - and I anticipated that the wait would be worth it. Mixed reviews - his painting is, of course, wonderful and the picture-in-picture of his wife/model is very good. It would have been helpful for him to say a little more about his mixing of colors as he was going along, although I think he is immersed in his creative process so I suppose explanation would be a speed bump and distract him. I would enjoy seeing a series of DVDs where he would go beyond the portrait sketch and do a start-to-finish oil portait. He does perform magic.
