There is some excellent information on this DVD. However, because Jamison wrote and directed the DVD no editing was, very obviously, effected.
Jamison says in 500 words what could be said in 5. This makes the DVD very difficult to watch. Fortunately, most players have a 2x or greater speed play.
Hollow forms are not for beginners yet Jamison treats the audience as if they had never touched a tool.
I would like to begin turning hollow forms. Jamison's system is clever and appears to make it seem very easy. Reading reviews on turning forums, the majority will agree that this is about the easiest way to turn hollow forms.
A good video if interested in HF turnings and the Jamison captured system.
I rate this a 3. Good information but in need of heavy editing. This would make a great 30 minute DVD!
This dvd looks like something from the 20th century. The video color is flat and the picture not as sharp as one would desire. Some shots are marred by excessive glare (white spots).
However, the meat of the dvd is very good. He starts off with describing and showing the use of beads on bowls. His beads are not the common round bead but one that is in shape with the bowl.
I rented the video for the coloring techniques. He does not disappoint! He shows the various pens and brushes, painters paint and brushes, dying with various dyes including water and alcohol bases with reasons to use each one. And a phenomenal decoration of some burr/burl hollow forms using air brushing.
I have a few dull looking burls and home. Chris demonstrated how to pop the figure but dying the piece black then sanding it off so the dye says in the figure. Then he colors various parts, randomly and deliberately with the air brush, cleverly blending the colors to create others. There were far too many techniques displayed that I could keep up with.
If you've ever had the desire to begin coloring your turnings or other wood objects, this dvd will keep you busy for a long time.
Despite its flaws with video, the techniques and demonstrations are invaluable. Note that the video was produced in England so the products listed will most likely not be found in the USA but go to any art supply house, wander around and you'll find every thing you need.
Highly recommended.
Being totally ignorant about airbrushing, I found this DVD interesting. It made me realize that I don't need a fancy device and I'll probably never want to go further then basic airbrushing of my wood turnings.
Good information about the mechanics and what to look for in equipment.
I liked this DVD a lot. All the basics of inlays are covered in such a way that he makes it look simple. In fact, I went through a box lid and rather then tossing it I decided to stick an inlay on top. Worked like a charm!
Chris Stott's presentation is rather zombie like but the information is great and there is lots of it. I wish I could find a DVD of this to buy. Only VHS is available and I got rid of my machine a while ago.
Highly recommended.
This DVD will explain in great detail how to carve a bowl so it looks like to was eroded by water over centuries. Neil demonstrates the different carving tools, both electrically powered - ArboTech, angle grinders, dremel; and hand carving tool. I've been interested in carving my turnings but had doubts about what tools to use. Some of these carving tools are not inexpensive. This DVD answered many of those questions.
Highly recommended!
Many of Trent Bosch's DVDs suffer from bad camera angles and dead pan narrative. It's too bad because Trent is very talented and a really good teacher. Trent's studio is comprised of tools that he made himself in a studio that's probably bigger than my entire house. In a way, he shows too many tools as the average woodturner would be hard pressed to purchase and store that many tools. The little carving that is shown is excellent. I would have loved to have seen much more. He shows a hollow form in the wrap up that is gorgeous but no mention about how is was made. I found myself not wanting to sit through a second viewing because of the tedium. Recommended with reservations.
I suppose there is a lot of information on this video. However, the material is presented with an off the cuff approach that is too repetitive and unfocused. The actual material could have been presented in less then 30 minutes.
