When you want to learn engraving on your own, you can get Meek's book. It is ok, but doesn't tell you HOW to engrave, at least not clearly. Watching this video fills that void, it's excellent. But neither the video or the book really can stand on their own as a "course" on beginning engraving.
A pretty good video that goes hand in hand with Checkering and Carving of Gunstocks by Monty Kennedy. Neither stand on their own very well for a beginner, but put both together and you will get a very good introductory course on checkering.
