Video: Fret Basics

I really liked fret basics. I got it because I have a couple of guitars that need a fret dress and I didn't know how to do a fret dress or what tools I needed. It was nice that Dan used "things you can find around your house". He did also show you the professional tool that you would use if you wanted to buy it.

So now I feel comfortable that I'll do ok with a fret dress. I do have one guitar that need new frets so I'll be trying that one out first.

The only reason I won't give this DVD a 5 is because some of the close up video was out of focus. This happens cause the camera is on auto focus and it appeared the camera couldn't decide what the most important object was in the frame. It actually annoyed me a lot.

Again another DVD by Dan that I really likes. You just can't learn this stuff in a book. Dan is very thorough in his explanations. Seeing the nut removed from different types of guitar and what to look out for you just cannot get this anywhere else. I don't want to have to go to an expensive seminar or school to learn how to do something this basic. My only goal is to maintain and do simple fixes on my guitars and this is in that category. Like right now I have a guitar that was setup with low action and extra light strings. I want to move up to light and I need a new nut.

I also rented the Fret Basics and, as with that one, I found this one to be fraught with out of focus close ups.

Quality of video was just ok and I think it was that way because it was a copy of a DVD and not the original. The first chapter had a lot of lines showing up, but that was just the introduction. The rest of the video didn't have lines, but seemed not as high quality as the other DVDs I've rented.

This DVD is great. I didn't know what was involved in creating inlays and this was truly an education. I thought the section on materials was never going to end. I did skip around a bit just to see how it was done and then went back and finished the materials section.

The guy in the video seems dry in his delivery, but it didn't matter to me I was just amazed. All I really wanted to do is a circle, something basic for my first go round, but after watching the video I might get a little more creative.

Definitely worth a rental.

What can I say, Dan is the man!!! I own two basses, but I'm really a guitar player. This DVD helped a great deal in understanding the bass and how to keep in tip top shape.

I like having the artist come in and play and talk about their setups.

The DVD caught me by surprise though because it was not ordered the way I thought it would be. I thought the DVD would be ordered like most books I've read on setup. It was nice that it wasn't. It was almost like having a conversation instead of instruction.

Great! Great! Great!

I have always been afraid to do much to my acoustic guitars. I have several electric guitars and have made many attempts to setup and maintain them, but never my acoustics.

After seeing this DVD I feel much more informed an confident about doing some of the work myself.

A plus was having the artists come in and play a little as well as share their guitar setup.
