Ed Caffrey made the mysterious understandable in this video. This was a great how-to on making complex patterns that have boggled my mind for a while. It also sold me on the usefulness of a hydraulic press. Although the sound got a little wonky at times, with the roar of the forge drowning out Ed, the producers did add subtitles here and there. Sometimes you have to look hard to find anything worthwhile in a video, but not this one. From hydraulic press design/safety to mosaic techniques, I learned a lot.
Some good pointers were sprinkled throughout a badly edited, painfully long video set. The length of the video could have easily been halved, without loss of value, just by abbreviating the endless grinding sequences and by removing the closeups of Dean's forearm as it blocked the view of his workpiece. There's an old adage regarding engineering--that one should "design with and eraser." Center Cross videos should have taken this approach when they edited this snoozer.
