Wow!!!

I rented the lathe series to see if I can learn something new. The DVDs arrived just before new years and I watched the whole thing in 2 days. Although the quality is not 'Hollywood block-buster', it was the best I ever saw. If you are even thinking of doing lathe work, you owe it to yourself to watch this series. I guarantee you will be glad you spent the money. I thought I knew everything before watching the 'Master' at work. I only have a Taig mini lathe, but the principles apply to any lathe. I had rented other machine shop DVDs before, and nothing even comes close to the depth and details of this course. The rest seem like "Home-made, Mickey Mouse" attempts.

Good thing I didn't waste my time and gas money going to the local community college and paying $475 for a part-time hobbyist course. If you want to make a living by becoming a machinist, you will HAVE to go to a technical college and jump through the hoops of apprenticeship to prove your worth, but if you want to learn everything there is to know about running a lathe and do your own machining, this course is a must!

Boring, 4 hours that could've been fitted in 40 minutes if it was thoughtfully planned, scripted and edited. The idea and production resolution is good, but instead of showing a calculator close up for 10 minutes and keep using words like "utilize" over and over again, why not make charts and illustrations on a computer? Many thanks for the fast forward button!

In one word, Terrible!

In more words, unorganized, poor content, lack of details, bad resolution, no scripting, bad editing, no chapters on DVD. If you lose your place, you have to start watching from the beginning. If you have never seen or heard of gear making, this DVD is for you.

Excellent! Very professionally done. Excellent close-ups, content, editing, scripting.

If you are a home machinist like me, you're going to love this set. The pace is fast enough that won't put you to sleep, but slow enough to not leave you breathless. It has some tricks and tips that makes it worth while to watch. Overall, this is a very good set. Considering the cost of buying the course, renting it from SmartFlix is an excellent deal!

Half of the set is good and relevant to a machine shop, the other half is FLUFF just to make the number of CDs higher to impress. I found his courses on the mill and lathe more educational. This set is alright.
