After years of seeing and reading about Schmid's paintings only in book form this DVD brought his philosophy and techniques to life very effectively. To see how he creates those amazing paintings was an eye opener for me. I understood in a clearer way not only how but most importantly why he does things to achieve his unique statements. However if you are a beginner and looking for some formulae in terms of composition or color mixing this is probably not the video to chose. Still, if you like his paintings I heartily recommend it, if nothing else it will motivate and enthuse you to get in the game. Possibly the love, enthusiasm and even wonder for painting that still possesses Richard Schmid during a fifty year plus career will rub off on you.

An exciting and informative look at Schmids fifty year career in painting the figure, portraits, still life and landscape. Richard comments briefly on each painting and sometimes at length where he shows the steps from first marks to the finish. Many useful comments about composition are made that I found helpful. This is a portrait of an artist who is very confident in his skills and accomplishments and not afraid of showing it. Bragging? Perhaps, but if you like Schmids work you cannot fail to impressed by his enthusiasm for painting and what he can do with a brush and knife. Like me you will be freshly motivated in your painting endeavors. If there is a negative in the DVD from a landscape artist's point of view, it is that landscapes are in the minority of subjects, the majority being figure and portrait.

For those who want to closely emulate Scott's paint application and limited palette I recommend the video. However if you have already attained a good measure of skill and developed your own style there is not much here. Scott may be a terrific workshop teacher with personality but there was little evidence of his ability to enthuse and excite with this video performance. It became quite boring after the first section. Also his constant use of the words 'attempt' and 'try' did not fit in with his abilities to produce some beautiful work. False modesty? I have seen Scott's work on gallery walls and they are very appealing. His attention to values and atmospheric perspective are excellent. Just wish he had better production and direction for this video.

Matt Smith is a very articulate and able demonstrator. He breaks the process into simple and easily understood steps. If you want to see how he achieves his appealing natural landscape style this video is a very good start. I.Kelly.
