I am an experienced painter and I found this video to be very good indeed. It is not for the beginner, more like intermediate painter. Using the graph method and Old Master Technique.
I almost bought this video, I am so glad I was able to rent it instead. M. Weistling is one of, if not my favorite painter. He obviously went to a lot of trouble to present a video of his style, but this video is way too long. He has added a few "side trips" which were informative, but the vast amount of the 4 disks were of his canvas and his paints and very little of the model he kept referencing with his run on monolog. He mixes his colors with every stroke or, more like dot, of the paint brush and it seems to take forever. His work is remarkable, no doubt about it, but his technique is a bit much.
This is a very good video for more of the intermeadiate to advanced painter. Scott likes to use lots of paint and lots of rework until he gets what he wants, he is a living master and a lot of good information on color and brushwork is presented. He easily admits that some of his paintings just don't work and he paints over them, nice to know that masters like him can also have paintings like that. This one is absolutely great though, very nicely done.
I really enjoyed this video, but make no mistake it is not for the beginner. I recommend a good understanding of oils and especially portrait painting if you are to understand all it has to offer. Dan Gerhartz is a living master oil painter and defines the word painterly in his technique.
This is a very good demonstration of not only this particular technique, but just about all aspects of oil painting in general. It is very well done, with good clear commentary and well filmed and executed.
This is a two DVD set that was poorly done. The artist is silent through almost all of the session. There are only a few moments of some questions from the audience of students spattered here and there, otherwise you just sit there in dead quiet watching this guy apply paint to the canvas. Also, the camera only shows the subject he is painting a very few times, so you have no idea what the artist is trying to represent with the colors he is using.
Basically, if see that Johnnie Liliedahl has done the video, it is going to be one of the very best available. This is also true of this one. It is full of good tips for all types of oil painting and some special ones for portraits from the 3/4 view.
Morgan Weistling is a living master, see www.artrenewal.org/. His work is incredible, but his technique is to use small brushes and small dabs of paint using temperature more than color. He is much more concerned with value. This is why he paints one dab next to another while mixing anew each time, a little cooler or a little warmer color. I enjoyed the 2nd disk more than the first, but the technique is very advanced.
