The gentleman in the video has a wealth of information and knows his trade. The video is very slow paced and more efficient time should have been spent on actual setup on the lathe and the running of the operatiion. Since this video is for more advanced operators, there should have been less small talk and more operational demonstration.
This video should undergo an editing process to compress the time spent on elementary items. There is quality here...it just takes too long to develop an idea or process.
Good narrative and the animation is done well. Use of the tools and the mill is essential and this DVD provides that. Excellent for review or for a beginner.
I have been thru 6 cd's. I find them well structured and the presentation and narration is very well done. (I teach clock repair and machining). I have a portable cd player that I place on the work bench near the machine or tools that are discussed and walk thru each item presented. It helps that I am a tool freak and have every tool on the cd. I would recommend that anyone considering purchasing a mill or lathe order this course and determine if they are ready for the plunge of purchasing the equipment required and if they would be able to imagine themselves creating work on these machines. With the methods shown on these cd's they can see what lies in store. The rewards of completing a finished piece is the essence of what these cd's can accomplish for the viewer.
I am an "student " of LMMU. I have a routine I use when the new cd's arrive. I watch them all and then go to my shop and gather all the items covered in the presentations. With a portable cd player by the appropriate machine I cue up a chapter and follow it thru with the actual items on the video at hand. Some of it is general review , but it helps to hone your skills by covering all of the details in the methodical presentations. By being interactive with the video, one can learn faster if they are new to the trade. If you have been in the trade for years it is a great review.
Grinding Lathe Tools is a slow paced video that you may wish to fast forward on occasion...BUT..don't do it. I was trained by a master watchmaker and in my youth I wanted to push on and skip by a detail or two. The essence of becoming a master at anything is to be mindful of the details and have the patience to work through all of the steps required to complete a job. The instructor in this video often repeats instructions but it is to insure that the student is doing a complete job and not cutting corners that result in inferior work. Watch and listen carefully and know that if you follow ALL of the instructions you will get good results.
