Interesting and informative, well worth watching. I viewed it twice the same night. It includes plans for a fun useful project for the beginner. The instructor is a little 'dry', he reminds me of my high school machine shop teacher, I will be renting the advanced DVD next in the series.
A great DVD for the beginner or novice. As a first introduction to the workings of the machine lathe for the Hobbyist a definite asset. Rudy covers the most common lathe uses and makes every thing look so easy, just as you would expect from a skilled machinist. Filming is a little shaky but not a big detractor. Information and technique outweigh any short comings yes worth renting
This is a just an O.K. video in my estimation - worth renting and watching. However, it is disappointing and I'd be real upset if I paid "list" and bought this DVD set. The camera work is very poor - most of it is handheld. I agree with the other reviewer who said there is something distracting about listening to Guy Lautard constantly saying "Yes" while he's filming and constantly correcting the instructor on obvious errors in narration and continually out of focus. It is not a very professional video. They try to do it all in one take. It’s a video where they stop and start the camera. If they had cut and dissolved from scene to scene, it would have improved the video. The narrative at the end is also very poor, it seems as if it only there to provide an opportunity to plug his other books while reading from a script that comes across like it’s the first time he's ever seen it.
I would like to have seen more detail on assembly of the machine. The builder keeps using a measuring tape to give approximate size and dimensions and I understand that they may not be critical. It just seems very amateurish in construction and explanation. If you're interested in how to build a machine like this, the information is not complete. No information on changing the rate of twist in barrel or how to calculate the gear size to accomplish it. He is using 1” in 10 that’s fine for some calibers, his .243 that is cut in the video but not for all calibers. The builder does say he built his machine from his scrap box and points out design deficiencies. It seems like the unit was constructed first and then the plans were drawn up to match the finished unit.
I was a little disappointed with the content - I have seen Bob Munden perform many amazing feats of fast draw and trick shooting on TV and I guess I was expecting to see all that again. Instead, there was a lot of interviews, talking and advertising and a lot less of the shooting than Bob is famous for. The best part was the old footage from his late night TV show appearances, but not much of that either.
Great DVD, informative and well worth the rental for the novice machinist. I learned a lot and was entertained as well
Very informative and entertaining, a good DIY video for someone with moderate electronics skills. Dangerous High voltage is present in most amplifiers, but should not be a problem if all safety precautions are followed. Information presented is clear and relevant.
Very informative, a good video for someone with moderate gun smithing skills. safety first make sure all safety precautions are followed. Information presented is clear and relevant. A few more extreme close-ups would have been nice, but all in all not a bad DVD.
The instructor Lex was dry and marginally informative.
Improvements in several areas would have given the viewer more information about the mill with less focus on the obvious, removing screws and the like, I guess I was expecting more content. I am glad it was a rental, I would have been disappointed with the purchase of this DVD. I am new to this tool but I did not get as much out of this presentation as expected. Other DVDs pertaining to this tool, to me seem to have better content and instruction.
Very good video. Excellent intro video to the 7x mini lathes. The DVD is informative, helpful, and easy to follow. Highly recommend, a very worthwhile rental.
