Another excellent Erlewine video. Clear descriptive text, clean audio with no muffled narration, and sharp video. A video that removes any hesitation about attacking at least a flea market find that needs a reset. Clarifies the methods and order of tasks in a way even an excellent book just can't describe (like the sound and motions when you press a neck out of the dovetail with a fixture.)
If you want to learn guitar repair and don't have access to a skilled luthier for hands on instuction grab the Erlewine videos, some tools, and a few flea market guitars and have at it!
Dan Erlewine is a man who clearly likes fretwork. It may well be his passion and calling in life. While the action and set up tapes from Mr. Erlewine are a bit dry (although excellent), he comes alive when he talks about fretwork and neck work. After watching this series (basic fretwork, advanced fretwork 1 and 2) I've tackled several partial refrets and numerous bits of action and neck work. I MIGHT have figured it out from the books, but these videos sure saved me a lot of mistakes and made the process clear. It's one thing to read "heat the frets with a soldering iron prior to removing..." How Long? How Hot? What am I looking for? The video makes it clear - I surely would have applied too much heat for far too long if I hadn't seen these videos.
If you need or want to do fretwork, and don't have access to live hands on learning from an expert, these are very helpful videos.
