This is a must see series. The quality of the video is great - very clear, good lighting and great camera angles. Alan is a great presenter in person, with this series being the next best thing!! I rented Video 1, and have seen Video 2 - don't miss either. Key lessons on sharpening. I'm a beginner, and it's much better to learn properly early on. As you will see, just using a skew properly will allow you to do many projects. For people just getting into turning, this is important because of the cost of the tools. Start here!!!
For those persons just starting out on a mini lathe, Bonnies' series is terrific. Only minor complaint I have is DVD's are no more than copies of her older VHS series. Never the less, content is worthwile. The great part is you will learn how to make some very neat stuff with only a small amount of material. Great for people who want to get into turning, but on a smaller scale to explore. Bonnie is also the maker of the Klein lathe shown in the video.
WOW - You need a good DVD player to keep up with this one. Richard turns very very very quickly! Luckily, DVD lets you go back easily to wath again. There are a good amount of examples presented in this video, so it makes for good watching. Quality is terrific - clear and a number of camera angles. I wouldn't recommend for the beginner, but a good choice after you have turned for a while.
Title needs to be our favorite flies for fishing "Out West." I'm in the East, so a number of patters don't apply. Many do, so I still enjoyed watching. Video quality is good, and DVD has menuing so you can easily jump around. Tying demos were very clear, and I did pick up a few good pointers. Good watch!!
Another great addition from Bonnie. A must see for those just starting out on a mini lathe. Boxes are a great project, and this video gives some great tips to get you started. Chatterwork is a great way to add some decoration to your projects - now the technique is clear!! Time for an update - this is a fairly old copy from her original vhs.
Very well done video. Richard actually takes his time in this one! He's a very fast turner. Nice clear and close video in this one. A number of projects are done start to finish. A nice touch is that he even leaves in a few mistakes, and shows how he recovers from them. Great video because it shows all about making the jam chucks, and how to nicely finish the back sides of the top and bottom.
Although just a dub from the original vhs (fairly old), info is still current on this one. Great video shows the machine threading technique start to finish. Bonnis is a very good instructor, and really shows the ins and outs of this process. Looks much harder than it really is.
This is a good rental for anyone getting started. For those that have turned a while, there wasn't much ground shattering info. New material info is in all the magazines these days. When this video was done, acrylics were new to the turners. Again - great info for the new turner, but not that much if for the rest. Bonnie - time for a new version!!
This video was terrific. I have been wanting to try thread chasing, but had no idea where to start. Alan gives a wonderful start to finish overview of the process. I actually understand how the tools work now! Video quality is very good, and the pace is just fast enough. In addition, a few really nice little boxes are made start to finish.
Covers Open Bowl Turning and Hollow Vessels A.
The open bowl video was very well done. After watching this production, I understand how to properly sharpen and use the Ellsworth grind gouge. Great shots, and very well done.
Have not seen the second part to the hollow turning, but I think they could be easily combined. Information is good, especially for a beginner, but a little slow pace. I found myself fast forwarding. As in the bowl video, you get a terrific expalanation of the bowl gouge with a stadard grind as well as the Ellsworth swept back grind.
Another great one from Bonnie. For those just getting a mini lathe, here is a great place to start. Bonnie covers many of the basics, on the small scale. Only issue is that it's getting a little dated - time for a new release. A good rental, however.
