I recently acquired a used Taig mini-lathe. With almost no experience turning or milling metal stock I badly needed information on how to use the machine safely and effectively. These DVDs were just the ticket. Jose Rodgriguez shows you how to do basic turning and milling operations and demonstrates the surprising versatility of small lathes. Rodriguez is a gifted teacher who uses just the right number of words to make his point. His photography and illustrations are first rate. His lessons are carefully thought out and elegantly presented. These DVDs met and exceeded my expectations. I now feel comfortable using the lathe and can see far more possibilities for its use than I ever could have found on my own. Highly recommended.
As someone new to metal turning and the mini-lathe in particular, I have found Jose Rodriguez's instructional DVDs to be invaluable in my own learning process. I have reviewed his introduction to the Taig lathe elsewhere on this web site. In this video, Rodriguez takes the mystery out of grinding tool bits, drill bits, milling bits, and other shop items. After discussing grinder safety, he shows how to make three simple, easy grinds to produce a cutting bit for almost any kind of metal. It's really as simple as one, two, three. All you need is tool bit stock, a grinder, an adjustable tool rest, and some patience. I looked at a lot printed diagrams of cutting bits, but never really understood the angles and their purposes until I watched this DVD. Highly recommended.
IF you are an advanced music student and IF you are well grounded in music theory, tonality, ear-training, etc., this would be a useful DVD for improving your acoustic bass playing. Without that background, however, the instructional portions will make very little sense. I would give it 5 stars for the advanced player who wants to take his improvisational skills to the next level, but a single star for a beginning student trying to learn basic techniques.
