The only problem I have with this video is that it should say up front that it is not an instructional video. It is a demonstration. There aren't really any words spoken on the video.
Having said that, anyone with a little experience working in glass and making marbles can learn from this video. It shows him making 8 different marbles. The Corkscrew is something most every marble maker learns as their first marble. It's one of the first ones I teach to my students. The "wigi-woo" or whatever he calls it is more commonly known as a "galaxy", and again, watching him make it will tell you what you need to know.
The different implosion marbles are the same way. While he doesn't say what he's doing, if you are familiar with making marbles and implosion techniques, you won't have any problem replicating them.
The only one I don't think is great is the "universe" marble. That is a complicated marble to put together, and some of the techniques you don't see him doing. Maybe that's on purpose, as I have yet to see a published tutorial/article/video on that technique. I had to learn it from experimenting.
So, other than that, the video is good. Just keep in mind, it's NOT and instructional video. That's why I didn't rate it any higher than I did.
The best information in this video is the beginning where Doug explains the technical aspects of glass, and talks about how to develop color. The actual beadmaking is good, but that's secondary for me.
The information in the beginning of the video is very good information for any borosilicate glass worker to know. Don't be tempted to skip through it. It may even benefit you to watch the technical part a couple times to make sure you fully understand it.
Tim's work and attention to detail are second to none. This is definitely one of those videos that you need to watch several times to get the most out of it. He gives so many helpful techniques that I recommend getting a notebook and taking notes. Even if you aren't planning on building a lot of frames (I just want to build one) it's well worth watching this video. Every question I have about building frames was answered by Tim's videos. There are so many times during the course of watching these videos that Tim would mention doing something and explain why he did it, and I thought to myself "I never would have thought of that, but it makes perfect sense."
This video is not one of those "entertaining" videos, so don't expect your non-biking friends or family members to enjoy this video. But if you are into bikes, these videos will tell you more than you ever wanted to know.
Good videos, but they won't play on standard DVD players. Disc 1 played fine, but 2-4 wouldn't. Tried three different DVD players. Two in the house, one in the car. Tried the DVD player on two different computers. Still no luck. It would play fine on my DVD-RW drive, so it must be something in the formatting. So, unless you are planning on watching it on a computer with a DVD-RW drive, you may have a hard time watching it.
Video itself is very good, but playability issues give it a low rating.
